Writers' Fest and What's Good!

Writers' Fest and What's Good!

September 28th 2017 the grade 7/8 class went downtown to the Kingston Writer’s Festival to hear Craig Davidson speak about his memoir, Precious Cargo, and what you need to make a memoir. The seminar took place at the Holiday Inn, downtown from 11-12. Mr. Spencer and Mrs. Singh each drove a van full of students downtown to the Holiday Inn. During the seminar the students took notes on what Craig Davidson had to say about what you need to write a good memoir and how he felt while writing his memoir. He told us stories about the students on his bus. I learned that you need lots of dialogue and imagery in a memoir. After that there was a brief question and answer period. After that, the students and teachers had lunch on one of the piers. After that, they walked down to Mia Gelato for ice cream. After that, the teachers drove the students back to the school and the day proceeded as normal.

This week was a very exciting week. Ms. Singh had informed the grade 7/8 class about a very special tradition that she carried on throughout all of her classes. This tradition was called What’s Good. Even though we had discussed it the previous week, she wanted to tell us more formally what What’s Good was. What’s Good is a tradition in which everybody describes to the class what is good about their life. What really makes What’s Good, good is the fact that one person in the class bakes a treat to bring in for the class. This tradition takes place on Thursday morning after singing Oh Canada. To make things more organized they made a schedule showing when everyone would be baking and bringing in treats.

This week’s Tech class was very fun. The grade 7/8 class was assigned a project in which they would write a script based on their memoir that they had started writing in Language Arts. They would record and edit it on a software called Hit Film.

In gym class we did not run around and exercise. Instead we sat around and discussed the backpacking trip with Mr. Schleger just so everyone would be on the same page.

The 7/8 class has really been enjoying their new teacher and is excited to see what’s coming later in the year.
