Our First Month in Grade 3/4

Our First Month in Grade 3/4

It is hard to believe that the first month of Grade 3/4 has come to a close. Grade 3/4 students have had a great month and have accomplished a great deal! Friendships have been formed, routines have been established, and the learning has begun! We just know that it is going to be a FANTASTIC year!

Lake Ontario Park

During our first week of school, we visited Lake Ontario Park. Students loved playing games led by Ms. K., running through the splash pad, and climbing on the awesome play structure. It was a great way to get to know one another better and celebrate our first week at school.

The Kingston Fall Fair

On Friday, September 14th  the Grade 3/4 class visited the Kingston Fall Fair. Students enjoyed learning, exploring, and tasting at a variety of booths highlighting agriculture in our surrounding area. This year, the theme of the Fair was the turkey. Students even got to meet “Tom the Turkey”! Other highlights of the fair included tasting fresh carrots, petting cows, meeting a police horse, watching a motocross show, and eating corn on the cob!

Learning, learning, and more learning!

Even though we have only been at school for one month, the Grade 3/4 class has already done a lot of learning. In Language Arts, we learned about the differences between retelling and summarizing. We worked to build our writing stamina through journal writing. We just completed a mapping unit in Social Studies which ended with us making our own maps of our dream amusement parks. In Gym, students learned and practiced soccer skills. We have also spent a lot of time working on our Spelling and Math programs this month.

Looking Forward

We have many great things to look forward to in October. Some of the upcoming highlights include trips to Little Cat Creek, Thanksgiving long weekend, a trip to the Corn Maze, Hallowe’en, and finishing our read aloud, The Wild Robot! We will continue to work on our Spelling and Math programs in our groups. In Social Studies, the Grade 3’s will be learning about Ontario while the Grade 4’s explore physical and political regions in Canada. In Gym, we will be playing some cooperative games and beginning our unit on volleyball. We will practice and refine paragraph writing in Language Arts, and continue to work on adding detailed evidence from the text when responding to reading. It is sure to be another super month in Grade 3/4!

Creative Comics

We just completed our art workshop about Comics. During this workshop we learned how to make our own comics. We had to plan out our story and and draw a rough copy for our comic.

We even got to explore using different inks so we could trace over our final copy. We practiced using a quill and an ink brush to draw a rock.

Some of us really liked using the quill and some preferred using the ink brush or a pen to trace over their good copy.

This was a really fun art workshop!

Grade 3/4 Engineers

Grade 3/4 Engineers

For Science this term we have been learning about strong and stable structures. We have completed design challenges that had us build the tallest free standing structure, the strongest structure, and even a chair out of straws!

During our design challenges we saw how different shapes make a structure stable. We also talked about what made our designs successful and how we could improve our designs.

We used what we had learned about building shapes to help the Kindergarten class learn about 3D shapes. We had to help the kindergartens build different pyramids and prisms by only giving verbal instructions. We were not allowed to touch anything! This was one of our hardest challenges, but we did it! We think the kinders had a lot of fun. We know we did!!

We have really enjoyed doing the design challenges in class and becoming  Grade 3/4 Engineers!

It is hard to believe that we have been in school for 100 days! We have done so many things over the last few months!

Ski Trip

A few of us went on the ski trip! We had fun exploring the different hills and skiing our way down the runs!

Valentine’s Day

We exchanged Valentines in our class. We hung out with the grade 1/2 class at school and we built different sculptures and baked some Valentine’s Day cookies.

Olympics

We have been learning about the Olympics in class. We have talked about the different sports, the athletes, and the provinces they train in. The Kindergartens to Grade 6’s competed in a house team Olympics outside. We competed in obstacle courses, snow soccers and made snow sculptures.

Little Cat Creek

Throughout February we went to Little Cat Creek. We went snowshoeing through the forest

Our First Month of 2018!!

Our First Month of 2018!!

Welcome to Lakeshore School in 2018!!

We have had a very busy start to the New Year.

Some of our highlights for the month are:

  • Art – We have been making a bird house. We had to draw and design our bird house before we could cut the wood. Mr. Richard showed us how to safely use some tools. It has been very fun using the different tools to cut and attach the walls and roof of our bird house.
  • Language Arts – We have been working through our Novel Studies. We are almost done Bridge to Terabithia and were very surprised by an event that happened in the book.
  • Gym – As a whole school we went skating once a week for 3 weeks. We had a lot fun skating together

.

  • Tech-  We have done a lot of cool stuff in tech class this month. We did a photoshop challenge with the grade 5/6 class where we worked with other members of our house teams to make the silliest looking picture of Mrs. Bullock, Ms. Tonya and Ms. Singh. We have also been programming our own games in Scratch. We have designed a game that moves a ball around the screen and we have to avoid different obstacles.

This has been another busy month! We are looking forward to what February has in store!

A Journey to the War Museum

A Journey to the War Museum

On Friday we travelled to Ottawa to go to The War Museum. We took a bus to get there. It was 2 hours each way!!!

We went to a workshop at the war museum about the battle of the Plains of Abraham. We learned that the British, the French, and the First Nations were involved in the Plains of Abraham. There were 6 chests full of different artifacts from that time.  We saw the British flag, the uniform that a British soldier would wear, and we saw some of the tools he might have carried. We also saw the uniform worn by the French and were able to hold some silver medallions.

After lunch we got to tour the museum. Some of us toured the Vimy Ridge exhibit. Most of us went to the LeBreton Gallery which is a room full of military vehicles. We saw a giant plane that was displayed in the air! We also saw some tanks, medical vehicles, torpedos, and other military vehicles. It was really cool!! For our art assignment, we had to sketch something that interested us at the museum. Most of us chose to sketch one of the military vehicles.

We had a lot of fun at the war museum!

Science is Fun!

In Science we have been learning about Soils. We have been exploring the different layers of soils, and we did an experiment where we used food to represent the different layers of the soil. We had a lot of fun doing this experiment!!

This week we did another experiment where we learned about where water travels inside soil. We used water, rocks, and soil and explored ground water, and precipitation. We observed how the soil absorbed the water and noticed that some of the soil was dry the next day.

We have a lot of fun doing our science experiments!
