New Year, New Adventures!
The Grade 3/4 class has had a great start to 2019! Students were very excited to come back to school and share all of their holiday adventures. It has been a busy month full of learning and fun. Here are some of the highlights:
Skating
We spent some time skating at the Invista Centre this month. Students really enjoyed lacing up their skates and showing off their skills. Even Miss Skinner tried out skating! It was a great way to spend our Wednesday gym class, and fun was had by all.
Building Project
We were very lucky to have Richard come in and help us with a building project this month. Students learned how to design and build a wooden knot. Using their math skills, they measured, sketched, cut, and created wooden knot puzzles. The only challenge is getting them apart! A big thank you to Richard for all of your help with this exciting project!
Winter Weather
It has been a cold and snowy end to January. Although we were stuck inside a few days, we took every opportunity to get out and play in the snow. Students loved digging, shovelling, building, and rolling in the snow mountains.
Learning
We have had a lot of fun this month, but have also been busy learning. We picked up where we left off in Spelling and Math. The Grade 3’s have been exploring Pioneers in Social Studies, while the Grade 4’s look at daily life during Medieval Times. We have been busy comparing and contrasting these ways of life with our own. In Physical Education we have been learning the ins and outs of basketball. Students are showing some big improvements and are really enjoying learning about the game. In Language, the Grade 3’s are finishing up our novel study, The Tale of Despereaux. We have loved the adventures of this brave, little mouse! The Grade 4’s have started Independent Novel Studies and are working hard identifying story elements in books of their choosing. Overall, lots of learning continues to happen each day in Grade 3/4.
Looking Ahead
February is set to be another busy month for us. We are really looking forward to the Ski Trip, Little Cat Creek, much more learning, and lots of fun with friends!
3/4 Remembrance Day Artworks
This week, students in the grade 3/4 classes spent some time reflecting on how soldiers and military personnel have contributed to our safety and society both in the past and present. Working with charcoal to depict the cities they protect, the rolling hills and farmland that we are safe to cultivate because of their sacrifices, and mountains that signify other lands and our global connections, students created a backdrop for printed poppies and messages. We are happy that these artworks have made their way out into the community, to legions and near the base, so that those in service past and present can see the thoughtful gratitude that our students have expressed. Halloween at Lakeshore
Halloween at Lakeshore On Wednesday, October 31st, staff and students at Lakeshore School got into the Halloween spirit. Exploration and Learning in Grade 3/4
The Grade 3/4 class has had a wonderful month of October. Students have worked incredibly hard and have participated in many fun activities and events. Here are some of our highlights from this month:
Little Cat Creek
Grade 3/4 students travelled to Little Cat Creek three Tuesdays this month. We were very fortunate to have beautiful fall weather for each of our trips. While at Little Cat Creek, students explored a variety of concepts, including habitats, plants, and birds. Student participated in games, nature walks and discussions led by our wonderful guide, Angela.
The Corn Maze
On Friday, October 17th we visited the Corn Maze on Wolfe Island. It was a very WINDY day, but everyone had a great time. Students worked together to navigate tricky mazes and really enjoyed ending our day with a corn toss competition. Thank you, Garth, for a fantastic day on the farm.
School Days
A lot of learning has happened this month in Grade 3/4. In Language Arts, students explored paragraph writing and wrote paragraphs about a variety of topics. They learned about introductory sentences, supporting details and concluding statements. Students recently started novel studies. The Grade 3’s are reading The Tale of Despereaux and the Grade 4’s are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We are looking forward to really digging in to these great reads! Our Social Studies learning journey took us through the physical regions in Canada this month. Students in Grade 4 made fantastic hockey jerseys representing the various land regions found in Canada. Grade 3 students explored urban, rural and suburban communities in Ontario. We have been learning about volleyball in gym and have been working hard on developing our volleyball skills, while also enjoying some fun scrimmages.
Looking Ahead
November will be another month of learning and adventure in Grade 3/4. Our focus in Language Arts will be our novel studies. We will be wrapping up our Social Studies units on Ontario and Canada. In math, students will be working on their Saxon lessons and will continue to apply concepts covered to problem solving scenarios. We will be talking about Remembrance Day and the importance of promoting peace in our local and global communities.
French in September - so much fun!
So far in French class, we have had a lot of fun, especially making and singing new songs. We learned about ‘Les Objets de la Classe’ (Classroom objects)the difference between masculine and feminine words in French and spelling and activities. We’ve also been practicing our dialogues to introduce ourselves and playing games that get us talking in French more and more. It has been challenging to get all the spelling right and to know the difference between ‘what is it?’ and ‘whose is it?’, but we are happy with French class and looking forward to more fun and learning!
