The fall has flown by in the Grade 1/2 classroom! We had lots of fun at Halloween, decorating cookies and playing games in our costumes!  During the week of Remembrance Day, we enjoyed meeting Mark, a Canadian Veteran.  We had lots of good questions about what he did to help people in other countries.  We wrote beautiful poems about peace and talked about how we can bring peace to our home and school.  We loved working in our Math books, doing Spelling sorts, reading Pippi Longstocking, building our Mission Moon Lego bases, and learning lots of new things about Holiday celebrations around the world!  One of our favourite celebrations was Dutch Christmas.  We even had a visit from Sinterklass! We sampled latkes and played with dreidels during Hanukkah!  We hope that it snows again really soon!  We loved playing in the fresh snow and making snow forts!

3/4 Remembrance Day Artworks

This week, students in the grade 3/4 classes spent some time reflecting on how soldiers and military personnel have contributed to our safety and society both in the past and present. Working with charcoal to depict the cities they protect, the rolling hills and farmland that we are safe to cultivate because of their sacrifices, and mountains that signify other lands and our global connections, students created a backdrop for printed poppies and messages. We are happy that these artworks have made their way out into the community, to legions and near the base, so that those in service past and present can see the thoughtful gratitude that our students have expressed. Here are a few of the images.

Halloween at Lakeshore

Halloween at Lakeshore On Wednesday, October 31st, staff and students at Lakeshore School got into the Halloween spirit. Exploration and Learning in Grade 3/4

The Grade 3/4 class has had a wonderful month of October. Students have worked incredibly hard and have participated in many fun activities and events. Here are some of our highlights from this month:

Little Cat Creek

Grade 3/4 students travelled to Little Cat Creek three Tuesdays this month. We were very fortunate to have beautiful fall weather for each of our trips. While at Little Cat Creek, students explored a variety of concepts, including habitats, plants, and birds. Student participated in games, nature walks and discussions led by our wonderful guide, Angela.

The Corn Maze

On Friday, October 17th we visited the Corn Maze on Wolfe Island. It was a very WINDY day, but everyone had a great time. Students worked together to navigate tricky mazes and really enjoyed ending our day with a corn toss competition. Thank you, Garth, for a fantastic day on the  farm.

School Days

A lot of learning has happened this month in Grade 3/4. In Language Arts, students explored paragraph writing and wrote paragraphs about a variety of topics. They learned about introductory sentences, supporting details and concluding statements. Students recently started novel studies. The Grade 3’s are reading The Tale of Despereaux and the Grade 4’s are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We are looking forward to really digging in to these great reads! Our Social Studies learning journey took us through the physical regions in Canada this month. Students in Grade 4 made fantastic hockey jerseys representing the various land regions found in Canada. Grade 3 students explored urban, rural and suburban communities in Ontario. We have been learning about volleyball in gym and have been working hard on developing our volleyball skills, while also enjoying some fun scrimmages.

Looking Ahead

November will be another month of learning and adventure in Grade 3/4. Our focus in Language Arts will be our novel studies. We will be wrapping up our Social Studies units on Ontario and Canada. In math, students will be working on their Saxon lessons and will continue to apply concepts covered to problem solving scenarios. We will be talking about Remembrance Day and the importance of promoting peace in our local and global communities.

September at a glance in Kindergarten!

Welcome to Kindergarten! September was a busy month for the Kindergarten class.
We started the year with a play day at Lake Ontario Park. Some of the students got to ride a school bus for the first time, which was very exciting! We played games with the older students, went in the splash pad, played at the park, and had a picnic.

We went to the Kingston Fall Fair where we learned about Blacksmiths, agriculture, and turkeys.  We got to pet goats, cows, and  visited the Police horse!

We learned about the changes that happen when the seasons change from summer to fall.  We began learning our shapes, colours, and numbers and played lots of games.

We began learning about letters and what sounds they make. We do a craft for every sound we learn!

What a fantastic month!

A Busy Month for Grade 5/6

A Busy Month for Grade 5/6

It has been a very busy September in the Grade 5/6 Class!

Our highlight for the month of September was The Amazing Race Kingston. We were split into three groups and given a set of clues and a map. As a group we had to navigate around downtown Kingston to different landmarks.

We got a picture with the Kingston sign, made a wish in the fountain at Confederation Basin, toured City Hall, saw some artwork at Martello Alley, and visited different statues and memorials. After the race we celebrated with some ice cream and gelato in the park! We had a lot of fun learning about the history of Kingston.

In class we have been learning a lot too! In Social Studies, we compared different types of government. In Science, we learned how to use a scale and a graduated cylinder to accurately measure the mass and volume of different solids and liquids. Gym focused on soccer skills which prepared us for the junior and senior soccer tournament.

October is going to be another busy month. We are looking forward to fishing, camping trips, volleyball, going to the Corn Maze, and working on our Science Fair projects.

We can’t wait for some more adventures at Lakeshore School!!

The grade 7’s have been reviewing the basic mathematical operations, order of operations, long multiplication, long division and solving word problems. The grade 8’s have been reviewing math operations involving fractions as well as angles, polygons, perimeter, area and circumference. They are ready for more challenges as move into October!

In Science class, the grade 7 class has been learning about Pure Substances and Mixtures, and different ways to separate mixtures. The grade 8 class has been learning about Fluids and Viscosity, and conducted a rate flow experiment involving household materials. It was a bit chaotic but informative!

In our French class we have already done many fun activities. We started the year with a learning contract so that everyone could feel comfortable in class and know what to expect. We learned a lot of useful phrases to help us express our opinions and we practiced these in several interesting discussions about technology, cell phones and school. We played bingo, Quizlet and Kahoot as well as a human scavenger hunt. We made presentations to the class to introduce ourselves and have even already had a quiz with good results. Everyone is becoming more confident and glad for a strong start.
