During our Mission Moon Lego Robotics class, we worked in groups to decide what we would need to take with us to the Moon!

We sampled food from Daphne’s garden, and we wrote about how we are thankful.  It’s been a very busy month!  We can’t wait to see what exciting things will happen in October!

7/8 Geography - Where we are.

Who knew that there was so much to know! We have been spending our social science time looking at geography, specifically how the physical characteristics of Earth affect and are affected by people and communities. We examined a case study about the Ebola virus through a geographic lens to get to know the four key aspects of geographic inquiry: 1. interrelationships, 2. spatial significance, 3. economic / environmental / cultural and political perspectives and 4. patterns and trends. The grade 8’s played Pandemic, a collaborative game exploring the roles and challenges of keeping viruses from spreading across borders, while the grade 7’s began a journey of discovery through a webquest about the world’s landforms.

We even had a special guest: a British volcanologist who Skyped with us from Germany to give us the inside scoop on all things volcano-related!

September French 5/6 - Introductions have been made

At the beginning of September we learned new French vocabulary to help us ask questions. We got to know each other by playing French games and presenting ourselves to the class. We studied, practiced our vocabulary, and played kahoot!, among other activities. We had many discussions and opportunities to talk and answer questions in French about pictures, videos and comic strips. Our teacher is also our Art teacher so we will be making and illustrating French storybooks for our kindergarten friends.

French in September - so much fun!

So far in French class, we have had a lot of fun, especially making and singing new songs. We learned about ‘Les Objets de la Classe’ (Classroom objects)the difference between masculine and feminine words in French and spelling and activities. We’ve also been practicing our dialogues to introduce ourselves and playing games that get us talking in French more and more. It has been challenging to get all the spelling right and to know the difference between ‘what is it?’ and ‘whose is it?’, but we are happy with French class and looking forward to more fun and learning! You can listen to some of our songs here:

The grade 3 and 4 class

Our First Month in Grade 3/4

Our First Month in Grade 3/4

It is hard to believe that the first month of Grade 3/4 has come to a close. Grade 3/4 students have had a great month and have accomplished a great deal! Friendships have been formed, routines have been established, and the learning has begun! We just know that it is going to be a FANTASTIC year!

Lake Ontario Park

During our first week of school, we visited Lake Ontario Park. Students loved playing games led by Ms. K., running through the splash pad, and climbing on the awesome play structure. It was a great way to get to know one another better and celebrate our first week at school.

The Kingston Fall Fair

On Friday, September 14th  the Grade 3/4 class visited the Kingston Fall Fair. Students enjoyed learning, exploring, and tasting at a variety of booths highlighting agriculture in our surrounding area. This year, the theme of the Fair was the turkey. Students even got to meet “Tom the Turkey”! Other highlights of the fair included tasting fresh carrots, petting cows, meeting a police horse, watching a motocross show, and eating corn on the cob!

Learning, learning, and more learning!

Even though we have only been at school for one month, the Grade 3/4 class has already done a lot of learning. In Language Arts, we learned about the differences between retelling and summarizing. We worked to build our writing stamina through journal writing. We just completed a mapping unit in Social Studies which ended with us making our own maps of our dream amusement parks. In Gym, students learned and practiced soccer skills. We have also spent a lot of time working on our Spelling and Math programs this month.

Looking Forward

We have many great things to look forward to in October. Some of the upcoming highlights include trips to Little Cat Creek, Thanksgiving long weekend, a trip to the Corn Maze, Hallowe’en, and finishing our read aloud, The Wild Robot! We will continue to work on our Spelling and Math programs in our groups. In Social Studies, the Grade 3’s will be learning about Ontario while the Grade 4’s explore physical and political regions in Canada. In Gym, we will be playing some cooperative games and beginning our unit on volleyball. We will practice and refine paragraph writing in Language Arts, and continue to work on adding detailed evidence from the text when responding to reading. It is sure to be another super month in Grade 3/4!

Goodbyes, Fundraising and Road Racing

Goodbyes, Fundraising and Road Racing

These last two weeks a lot happened in our class…and school! Some exciting/sad things that took place included: the Fort Henry Road Race, we organized a car wash for our end of year trip, Raghad one of our international students’ had her last day in Canada and had to travel back to Saudia Arabia, and Claire Schleger got to share her personal project story with a public school class.

Last Monday, Lakeshore’s Track and Field team left to run a race at Fort Henry. They left around 8:45 AM in the morning. Senior Girls (Grades 7 & 8) ran 2.5 km and

Senior Boys (Grades 7 & 8)  ran 3.4 km. This was not an easy race because the terrain for this race was very bumpy and there were a lot of uphills and downhill. Everyone did awesome in their race and tried their best, there was A LOT of sweat! After the race, every runner from grade 3-8 got a ride to Mcdonalds and got a Mcflurry, a sweet treat to end the race!

Last Thursday was our Lakeshore Car Wash to raise money for our end of year trip.It was organized by the Grade by the Grade 7-8 class and 5-6 class!  At the car wash, there was also a BBQ run by Mr. Schleger, the BBQ was amazing. We had many customers and raised around $700.00 before other costs. We all had different roles and some of us washed the tires, bumpers, windows and more! We had people advertise on the side of the road by holding signs and yelling at cars to come in! Because of the good advertising we had, we managed to draw in many Amy’ Taxis’s and a few of their cars came by and supported us! A lot of parents also showed up to the car wash. It was a pretty busy day and we got all got really wet and grimy.

On Thursday night our class went to Jack Astors to have a farewell dinner with Raghad our international student who is heading back to Saudi Arabia. The entire class came. The teachers that came were Ms. Singh, Ms. Bullock, Ms. Trish, Ms. Tonya and Mr. Schleger. Ms. Singh organized the dinner and the cake and brought gifts that each 7-8 student paid $5.00 dollars each for. I think Raghad really liked the custom-made mug that had pictures of our class on it. Other students also brought gifts for Raghad, it was sad to say good-bye and maybe one day we will get to go to the Middle East to visit her!

Finally,  for part of her personal project, Claire Schleger wrote a novella about a young girl who challenged the status quo by trying out for a boy’s baseball team. She contacted different schools about organizing a reading to young classes and her first reading was organized by J.R. Henderson Public School.

She got to read her story to a grade 4 class and they all loved her story and asked her lots of interesting questions! It’s cool to see how different all of our personal projects are and how we get to involved in the community.

“Levitate away from you, Levitate away from us….” These are beautiful lines heard murmuring in the air on the corner of Wellington and Princess St last week. The lines were from the original song “Levitate” written and preformed by Aaron Mason as part of his personal project. As part of his project, Aaron decided to write and perform songs and busk in the streets of Kingston so he could raise funds for the Joe’s Mill Music Lending library. He has already raised $220! Please look out for him on the streets of K-town tomorrow!
Last week students pushed their physical and academic limits in preparing for the LCVI 2.8KM road race AND at the All Science Challenge Quiz Game! Our 7/8 Lakeshore crew ran their best, and many of them came in the top 100 with over 3000 students across Kingston in attendance! At the All Science Challenge, our all female team of Claire Schleger, Quintyn Zuber, Megan Ding and Lily Naaman came in FIRST PLACE and won the gold medal! They rocked their knowledge in the categories of space, engineering, environmental science, physics, chemistry and more…congrats to these STEM focused ladies!
This week, our class danced all our worries away at the annual “Celebration of Dance” festival at Fort Henry! The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and Taylor Swift was blasting from the speakers…and our class brought their best salsa moves! Special shoutout to Anders and Aaron who insisted they lead the dance celebration festivities next year! Just kidding!
Finally, we ended our week on a suspenseful, controversial, and  passionate note with our “Court Trial for the murders of Romeo and Juliet!” Our classroom was transformed into a courtroom, and the jury was carefully selected from the Grade 1 and 2 class. There was shouting. There were tears. There were shocking secrets revealed! The prosecution and defense teams had two weeks to write, prepare, and deliver opening and closing statements, witness statements, and ultimately, prove their opposing team WRONG! The students were incredible in their roles, and their characters came alive through passionate dialogue and memorable costumes! Special thanks to Chris (Noah’s Godmother) for lending us the costumes!

Creative Comics

We just completed our art workshop about Comics. During this workshop we learned how to make our own comics. We had to plan out our story and and draw a rough copy for our comic.

We even got to explore using different inks so we could trace over our final copy. We practiced using a quill and an ink brush to draw a rock.

Some of us really liked using the quill and some preferred using the ink brush or a pen to trace over their good copy.

This was a really fun art workshop!
